Nepal'S Clothing Exports To The United States Dropped Sharply

In June 13th, the Kathmandu Post reported that Nepal's clothing exports to the US dropped by 36% over the first 5 months of 2008, due to labour disputes, reduced orders and declining industrial competitiveness.

According to statistics from Nissan Apparel Association, Nissan clothing manufacturers only exported US $8 million 30 thousand to the US, compared with us $12 million 540 thousand in the same period last year.

The report shows that the largest drop in 3, 4 and May, of which only 1 million 100 thousand US dollars were exported in May.

Because of the turbulence in the tyre area a few months ago, customs clearance was closed for 16 days, and the company failed to deliver the goods on time, resulting in the loss of more orders.

The current export volume is only 1/8 of its peak in 2003.

In 2002, the United States provided zero tariff treatment to the Caribbean and sub Saharan countries, and the factors such as the invalidation of international textile quotas in 2005 seriously affected the export of NIM to the United States.

The number of garment manufacturers dropped from 500 to dozens, and about 80 thousand workers lost their jobs.

Nissa appealed to the government to set up a garment processing park to reduce pportation and production costs.

And strive for zero tariff treatment.
