Transformation from illustrator to Paris Designer

Pierre Hardy

Famous for its bold avant-garde and architectural style, it often collaborated with the top fashion brands such as Herm s and Balenciaga, and its personal name brand is also popular.

With the concept of breaking through the traditional barriers and challenges, Pierre Hardy's shoes, bags or jewellery all have a large number of followers in the world, and they are constantly developing new products in the field of design.

Recently, SSENSE interviewed the talented designer, talking about his love for art, the skiing culture in 60s and his actions in fashion circles.

Let's start with your aesthetic sense. When you were a child, do you often touch art and design?

No, not at all.

Compared with design, I was more fascinated by sports and sports activities.

In my childhood, design was not a real professional existence, but it meant something to some people.

In fact, I like drawing very much, but I hardly think of design.

So, like other kids, from sports to painting, you have done all you need to do. But are you also the kind of person who paints alone?

Absolutely, I can draw all day by myself.

What was your first experience with fashion? Or did you have clothes designed to touch you?

The first thing I should be fascinated by should be ski suit, because it is different from others.

For children, clothes are just for wear, but when you go skiing, you will dress differently than usual. This is very special.

For example, I still remember mother's ski suit in the early 60s, which was very different from her usual dress.

That should be the first fashion related experience in my memory.

I think the dress is beautiful because it is compared with her everyday costume.

Ski suit

It looks very modern.

The ski suit is rich in pattern printing and design, and at the same time is very simple. This is very unusual, very special, and must be functional, and for women in the 60s, they also have a sense of elegance.

I still remember those colors and fabrics, all in all.

Even though I was young, I noticed that skiwear are different from everyday clothes.

In the early 60s, skiing culture was an important force in modernization.

Yes, that's right.

Exactly.

Ski suit should match speed and movement, and also adapt to changes in the surrounding environment.

So for me, it is of great significance.

And we often skiing at least 3 to 4 times a year. This is great!

Later, you learn Fine Art and become an illustrator. What artists and artistic behaviors do you admire?

(HA HA) innumerable, but I like to combine old things with new ones.

For example, I love Caravaggio very much.

For me, his works are most powerful and inspiring.

Whether it's light, contours or dynamic moments, it's all romantic, though it's earlier than the real romantic movement.

At the same time, I also appreciate Botticelli, which is very important to me during the whole Renaissance.

To a certain extent, it looks like a "Lost Paradise".

I also like the eighteenth Century French painting, which is a perfect presentation of art, technology, methods, new senses, new understanding and new look.

Of course, I am also fascinated by Modern Art modern art and Contemporary Art modern art, from Sol Le Witt to the present creation.

International Festival of Contemporary Art (FIAC) has just been held in Paris last week. Is there anything you appreciate?

I like Brice Marden.

Last week, I also saw many good works in FIAC, and of course there was pop art master Warhol.

As a fashion designer, I think pop art is very important because sometimes modern art is abstract and far from real life.

But pop art has a close relationship with real life, whether it's from design, perception, or display method, and today

Fashion circle

Still have full influence.
